Free as a Bird
Watching a bird lose itself in flight, free and unhurried,
I decided to bring that feeling into a game
First Try
It was important to decide firsthand on the camera position and the controls. I also wanted the bird to tilt it's whole body when it changes direction or altitude.
First Prototype
Second Try
With the help of my colleagues, I took note of the improvements needed for the game.
First, turn the bird into an eagle and get the flight feel right: add a flap-then-glide cycle for forward flight, a top-down view while descending, and sharper, more noticeable turns, including turning sharply while descending at the same time.
Then work on pacing and challenge: increase overall speed and add a running target to chase.
After that, build out the world: add multiple cliffs , add a dive mode with a dive cancel option, a storyline, and a bigger ground scale.
